New Zealand reopening borders by July 2022

On Wednesday, May 11, 2022, the government set a new timeline to reopen the border and reconnect New Zealand with the rest of the world. The New Zealand border will be fully reopened by July 31st, three months earlier than previously planned.

As entry to New Zealand from Pacific Island Forum countries is a priority, visitors from these countries will be able to apply for visas starting on May 16th. All work visa categories, including Accredited Employer Work Visas, will be available for application starting July 4th. Applications will also open for student and visitor visas beginning July 31st. On July 31st, the maritime border will reopen.

Additionally, all Work to Residence visa holders who arrived onshore on June 9th and were due to expire on or before December 31st have their visas extended by six months. Two-year open work visas granted to Essential Skills, Postgraduate Work, and Partner of New Zealander visa holders who arrived onshore on 9 May and are due to expire on or before December 31st.

The Government also announced changes to make it easier for high-skilled migrants to be hired and to attract them. Some sectors will continue to shift away from lower-skilled workers.
