What is Invitation to Apply for Australia Permanent Residence

Just like in Canada, the Australian Government also issues an Invitation to Apply for eligible candidates to apply for permanent residence in Australia. Invitations are only issued through SkillSelect, which expresses interest in an eligible candidate’s profile.
Which Visas Require an Invitation to Apply in Australia?

The Independent and Family Sponsored Visas
You will be required to have an Invitation to apply for a Visa if:
- You pass the points test system
- The occupation ceiling limit in which your occupation falls has not been reached
- You are one of those candidates ranking higher in the Expression of Interest SkillSelect.
Invitations are issued once every month, and news of the same is published on the Australian Department of Immigration website.
State and Territory Nominated Visa
You may receive an Invitation to apply for this type of visa if:
- A state or territory government nominates you
- The occupation ceiling limit in which your occupation falls has not been reached
- You have passed the points test system
Once you receive an invitation, you will have 60 days to take the necessary actions and apply for the visa. During this time, you cannot change any information you have entered in your expression of interest (EOI).
If you do not apply after you receive two invitations, your application will be deleted. You will then need to create a new expression of interest if you still wish to apply for a visa.
What You Need to Do After Receiving an Invitation to Apply?
After receiving an invitation, you will have 60 days to lodge your online visa application. If you do not apply within this time, you will need to wait for another invitation.
If you receive two invitations for the same EOI and do not lodge an application, your EOI will automatically be deleted. If you still wish to apply for a visa, you must submit a fresh EOI.
You can either be in or outside of Australia when applying for the visa.
You must ensure that you meet the document checklist requirements that support your visa application. It is advised that you begin collecting these documents even before submitting the expression of interest.
What if You Do Not Receive an Invitation to Apply?
Suppose you do not receive an invitation to apply within two years of submitting your expression of interest. In that case, you will be sent an email reminding you of your EOI expiration date. After your EOI has expired, you will need to submit a new EOI.
In case you turn 50 before receiving an Invitation to apply, you will not receive an invitation.
What Documents Should You Attest With Your Application after Receiving an Invitation to Apply?
Here is the list of documents that you will need before submitting your Visa application online:
- If you are migrating with your family, you need to present passports for all your family members
- Educational documents of all applicants must also be presented
- You will need to show your English proficiency scorecard of either IELTS or PTE
- Your assessment body’s report
- PCC from your country
- Bank statements
- Tax return proof
- Your CV
- Birth certificate – if you have kids
- Marriage certificate – if you are married
- Affidavit for your spouse – if they have changed their surname

How can you update the Expression of Interest?
You can update your Expression of Interest details online through SkillSelect. You must do this before you receive an Invitation to apply. Once you have received an invitation, you cannot make any changes to your Expression of Interest for the next 60 days.
In this case, you will need to wait for your invitation to expire before making changes to your details. You will receive a second invitation if you are eligible. Failing to lodge a visa application during this period will result in the deletion of your EOI.
How Many expressions of Interest Can You Submit?
There are no such limitations for submitting an Expression of Interest. You can submit multiple expressions of Interest as required. But you will need to wait for your previous Expression of Interest to expire before creating a new one.
